Now that was Fun!  After a short run with Run Club on Saturday I headed out to Blackstrap and did another 5K at the SRRA Trail Run.  What a beautiful, hot day!  That is a challenging but fun trail to run on.  This was my first trail run and first run in my New Balance Minimus Trail shoes and they were perfect for this course.  Here are pictures I took after I finished. https://picasaweb.google.com/113631729685036076321/SRRATrailRace20110924011?authkey=Gv1sRgCPSc8Zqf35PwXA .  Thanks to Peter Goode and Lynn Cushway and their merry band of volunteers for putting this on.  Looking forward to more of the same.

One of our former managers, Sean McConnell, sent me this short story last week which I thought fit with the theme of trail running.

Feeling the pure joy of being alive the Rabbit jumps in and takes a risk only to pull back for a moment, "is this the true path or did I leave my spirit behind me?" Then the Rabbit laughs "My spirit is in my legs" he says and then he hops off.

DAILY KICK IN THE BUTT courtesy RUNNER’S WORLD

“I use running as a way to keep myself young. Imagine working with 18- to 22-year-olds, some of them among the best athletes in the country. You want to stay up with them somehow.”  This is how I feel about working at BRAINSPORT and running with Run Club.

LAST SALE OF 2011

Or as Brian called it, the Dolly Parton Sale.  ”9 to 5” this Saturday, October 1 at Grace Westminster Church on the corner of 10th street and Eastlake Ave.  We’ll be selling shoes, bags, and socks at a minimum of 50% off with some shoes as little as $29.99.  The next sale we will have wont be until January with the Below Zero Sale

FALL FASHIONS

Summer 2011 is over, let’s hope this fabulous Fall weather continues.  Inevitably though winter will hit us.  New stock is arriving to help you run more comfortably.  adidas has a new Climaproof shoe and BROOKS has a Ghost GTX which is waterproof and breathable.  Last winter I ran for the first time in a pair of weather proof shoes and combined with Smartwool socks my feet have never been so comfortable in winter.  Winter footwear is also appearing in PEDESTRIAN including a new waterproof, insulated boot for men from Dunham.

BROOKS Silver Bullet Wind Pant for Men and Wind Tight for Women.  This is a new winter running pant/tight that is weather proof on the front, nicely fleeced inside and has a reflective panel ( think space blanket ) inside the front panel to reflect body heat.  Bet this is going to be a nice and warm pant for cold winter running. $160.  Sorry, doesn’t come with a Coors though says Jamie.

FALL CLINICS

Well the Fall clinics are well under way.  We had our maximum of 35 sign up again for the Learn to Run Clinic which started last Wednesday night.  I ran with them on their first outing and I think it is going to be another fun group of future runners.

RISE AND SHINE

This one started last Tuesday morning at 6:15AM so if you were thinking this might be good idea you could still join up this week at the latest.

This is an 8 week clinic for experienced runners, you don’t have to be fast but it is not a beginner workout.  Participants will meet with coach Brandi Pozniak at BRAINSPORT and head out for interval training for approximately an hour.  Upon returning to the store you will do a 15 minute core workout.

You can test your improved fitness at the Arthritis Society’s Jingle Bell Run on November 20.  Cost is $70 per person plus GST.

POZNIAK FITNESS PLUS

Coach Brandi now has her own website.  A lot of our clinic participants have not only enjoyed their clinics but have enjoyed personal best times after training with Brandi.  If you are considering a running coach keep her in mind. www.pozniakfitness.ca

MARATHON WORLD RECORD

Peter Goode posted this on the SRRA Facebook page on Sunday.

Kenyan Patrick Makau runs 2:03:38 at the Berlin Marathon, unofficially a new world record! Pacer Stephen Chemlany was the second finisher in 2:07:55.  That is amazingly fast!

BRUCE IS BACK HOME

Several weeks ago I posted on our Facebook pages that Jessica’s dog Bruce had gone missing.  I checked with Jessica on the weekend and happy to report that Bruce had just been found after almost three and a half weeks.  Bet he got some treats.  Jessica says he is very happy to be home.

CARLY IS BACK FROM WORLD’S

Carly Priebe is back from Canada’s World Paratriathlon Championship training camp in Beijing where she was coaching the paralympic triathlon team.  She is offering the following training for triathletes and runners.

TRX & Restore for Triathletes & Runners - Tuesday nights from 8:45-9:40pm for 12-weeks (Oct.4th to Dec.13th, 2011) at Lead Pilates (on Taylor St.) coached by Carly Priebe of Transition Sport & Fitness.  This very functional strength training will focus specifically on the needs of triathletes & runners (all abilities welcome as exercises are easily varied). If you have never used TRX suspension training straps you are in for a treat! This 55minute classes will include exercises to strengthen swim, bike, and running muscles as well as strengthen stabilizers to prevent injury. Single leg exercises, in particular, will be used to challenge athletes to achieve balanced musculature. The final portion of the class will focus on restorative exercises using various props to aid in recovery. A great "off-season" or base training program for triathletes & runners!

COST: $15/class (contact Carly at carly.coach@gmail.com or www.transitionsportandfitness.ca or register through Lead Pilates directly, www.leadpilates.com ). Interested in more TRX? Also sign up for Carly’s open TRX class on Saturdays 9:30-10:25am.
