The SRRA Ultra was another success. Congratulations to everyone who participated and to the organizers and volunteers. Saw lots of comments on Facebook about the great volunteers. After run club on Saturday morning I headed down to the race for the pancake breakfast and because I heard some were running in the buff. Turns out it was a new SRRA Buff and they look sharp too. Check out the SRRA website www.saskatoonroadrunners.ca for results, pictures by Dave Stark, and I think you can purchase your own Buff too.
Race Director’s Report
Well, another year for the Ultra, and despite a few small glitches it ran quite smoothly. Kudos to all the runners. The competition was getting a little fierce when people started betting money AND pancakes on winning teams.
And kudos to all the volunteers who gave us their hard earned time. We even had an “official” volunteer traffic cop at one intersection, with his stop sign and whistle!
And a big thanks to Brian and Brainsport for their ongoing support, use of their facility, and donation of prizes.
Some of the highlights included: the festivities and community feel the 17th Extra Ops Travel Ireland unit of the Girl Guides brought to the pancake tent. If you didn’t want pancakes you could have Girl guide cookies! In case you didn’t know, all proceeds from the pancake breakfast, as well as $3.00 for each runner goes to help fund their upcoming trip to Ireland.
The purple tutus (you know who you are!)
The impressive 3:44 finish of the winning solo male
The “moving of the portapotties” brigade who came to the rescue when our portapotties were delivered too far away!
The look of astonishment on one of the marshals face when he saw his first case of bleeding (male) nipples-priceless!!
The fact that we get 55 volunteers out for a race of 120 runners!
The display of camaraderie shown by some of the volunteers and SRRA executive as they stayed out long after the course closed to make sure the last runner wasn’t alone...
That’s what makes our Saskatoon running community second to none, and we’re proud to be a part of it.
Thanks everyone!

NEW THIS FALL
I returned last week from vacation to find more new items in the stores for your running and walking pleasure.
It’s not winter yet but UKSI Winter skirts were sure popular last year and will sure to be a hit again this winter. Check out their new website at www.uksi.ca , you can even order online now!
We have four new shoes from BROOKS who have launched a new campaign called Pure Project. They talk about “Feel and Float”, some runners prefer to “float” when running and some prefer to “feel”. Float would be the traditional shoes with “maximum comfort and stability” and Feel would be more akin to barefoot running where you have
“a greater connection to the road and the dynamic feedback the environment offers”. The Float shoes you might be familiar with, the Ghost, Glycerin, Ravenna, and Adrenaline. The Feel shoes are Pure Cadence, Pure Flow, Pure Grit, and Pure Connect. Stop by the store and check them out. Here is a link I’ve found to additional information on the Pure Project http://www.brooksrunning.eu/396883/995/en/Pure-Project.html .
More new shoes - from Innov-8, the F-Llite 230. This is another minimalist shoe that has gathered a lot of interest from people doing Crossfit. It’s in unisex sizing. Similarly we have two more shoes from New Balance, the MX & WX20 which is also designed for working out in the gym and the MX & WX813 designed for use on cardio machines for people who have been experiencing numb feet using their traditional running shoes. Sticking with the minimalist scene is the Hattori from Saucony. Switching to winter running, check out the Salomon SpikeCross. This is the same as last years Speedcross but they’ve added spikes. I ran last year in the Speedcross and it was great except on ice so the spikes will be a welcome addition. For you barefoot runners New Balance has brought out a winter version of the Minimus Trail so you can still enjoy the barefoot feel and not lose the feeling in your feet.
This doesn’t come close to all the new shoes when you add in all the new styles in PEDESTRIAN including a New Balance Minimus Walker. There are some really nice boots that have come in to PEDESTRIAN and the staff are enjoying trying them on and modeling them. Tough for an old guy like me to keep up with all the changes LOL.

GUINNESS BOOK OF WORLD RECORDS?
You might recall last week’s report on the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon including Fauja Singh. At 100 years of age he became the oldest person to run a marathon. Jamie sent me this link to an interesting article on this amazing individual.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2011/oct/19/secret-worlds-oldest-marathon-runner-100
Canadian Running Magazine is reporting that the folks at Guinness won’t recognize him as such in their records as he can’t produce a birth certificate. His British Passport and a letter from the Queen congratulating him on his 100th birthday don’t cut it.
TRAIL SAFETY
We got an email from Chris the other day about another situation to watch for on the trails.
I was running with my dog at quarter to 6am this morning on the non-lit part of the path between Circle Dr. Bridge and the Train Bridge (on the East side of the river). Thankfully, I was wearing my head lamp as I came up to something laying in the middle of the path. I originally thought it was just a black garbage bag as there was a city garbage can a few meters away. I trained my light on it, and it moved. I stopped dead in my tracks. It was an honest-to-god badger! If I hadn't been wearing my headlamp I would have ran right on top of it, and it probably would not have ended well. Thankfully it moved off into the field, and I completed my run heading in the opposite direction.
There be wildlife out there! Be safe!

UPDATE ON RICK HANNA
Rick’s wife Susan has let us know that Rick has been transferred from RUH to the Transitional Care Unit, room 6331, at City Hospital. I’m sure he’d appreciate a visit from friends. For those of you who might not be familiar with Rick, he has been a long time member of the Saskatoon running community whose ability to run has been curtailed by Huntington’s disease. Despite this he has been a regular at Run Club on Wednesdays until a couple of months ago when he had to be hospitalized.

RUNNING IN NORTH CAROLINA?
The TIMES reaches far away. Rosalie Davies used to run with us but moved near Charlotte, North Carolina but still reads the TIMES. She says there are a couple of marathons in her area this month and another in January. If you are travelling there she’d love to hear from you. Here is her email address. rosaliecdavis@gmail.com
MOVEMBER
This year I expect there will be even more interest in Movember with the passing of Jack Layton who had fought prostrate cancer. Closer to home, our friend Dave Stark has had his own battle with prostrate cancer and as he put it, become the unofficial poster boy for this form of cancer. If you aren’t familiar with Movember, it is a movement where for the month of November men grow mustaches to raise funds for research and awareness of prostrate cancer. I’m not generally one for trying to raise funds but this year with Dave’s battle I am motivated to join Movember. I haven’t had facial hair since 1989. In fact I shaved my scraggly beard and mustache off one Sunday morning in November 1989 and that afternoon the Saskatchewan Rough Riders won the Grey Cup. I’m sure there was no connection but maybe this might help them too? Anyway if you would like to help me raise funds for Movember and friends like Dave you can donate by following this link
http://mobro.co/IanColvine .
ASK AN EXPERT
I’ve added another Q&A to our Ask An Expert page, this one about Omega 3 Supplementation. Check it out and if you have any questions for our experts send them our way and we’ll get an answer for you.
BRYAN WOODS MEMORIAL LECTURE
Michelle Morrison thought you might be interested in an upcoming Bryan Woods Memorial lecture - 7:00 pm, Wednesday, October 26 @ the Broadway Theatre. The guest speaker is Saskatchewan's former Premier - Roy Romanow.
FREE SHOES
This will be our 4th year of giving away your donated gently used shoes in the community. This year we will be at Princess Alexandra school from November 3 to 5. Princess Alexandra is the elementary school that Brian attended and got his start in running so he is really excited about going back and giving to children in that community.
You can help this initiative in several ways. While we have lots of adult shoes and can always use more, we can always use more children’s size running shoes and children’s winter boots. Thursday November 4 we will be setting up at Princess Alexandra and that is a busy day organizing tables and shoes by sizes. We also welcome volunteers for Friday, fitting children from community schools and again Saturday when it is open to the general public. If you are aware of people who might benefit from this program let them know they can come on Saturday. You can volunteer by contacting Mike McDonald at
mim074@mail.usask.ca .
