Hope you aren’t experiencing a Halloween Hangover from too much candy.  Today is known in some parts of the world as the Day of the Dead and tonight is the 6th annual Day of the Dead Run put on by Mud First Racing.  The event is tonight at 7PM at Blackstrap Provincial Park.  If you are heading out there tonight make sure you remember your headlamps or a flashlight.  I have a feeling there are going to be some fun stories to tell after tonight.  Information at http://mudfirstracing.webs.com/.

FREE SHOES

This will be our 4th year of giving away your donated gently used shoes in the community.  This week we will be at Princess Alexandra school from Thursday through Saturday.   Princess Alexandra is the elementary school that Brian attended and got his start in running so he is really excited about going back and giving to children in that community.

You can help this initiative in several ways.  While we have lots of adult shoes and can always use more, we especially need children’s size running shoes and children’s winter boots.  Thursday,  November 3 we will be setting up at Princess Alexandra and that is a busy day organizing tables and shoes by sizes.  We also welcome volunteers for Friday, fitting children from community schools and again Saturday when it is open to the general public.  If you are aware of people who might benefit from this program let them know they can come on Saturday.  You can volunteer by contacting Mike McDonald at

mim074@mail.usask.ca .

SALOMON is partnering with us and giving Free Shoes.  With every purchase of a pair of SALOMON shoes, SALOMON is going to donate one pair of SALOMON children’s shoes up to a maximum of 50 pair.  This promotion lasts until November 3.

EVENTS

Saturday, November 5 - SRRA Prediction Mile and Annual Meeting.  That’s this Saturday, current members and potential members are welcome to attend.  The Prediction Mile is at 10 and the meeting is at 11.  If you are going for the Prediction Mile take a watch, you can’t wear it during the race but you will partner with someone who will time you and then you reciprocate.  The prize for the closest prediction (male and female) to actual time will be free entry to the 2012 Saskatchewan Marathon.

If you aren’t a member we encourage you to join and be a part of this organization.  Membership in the Saskatoon Road Runners Association has it’s benefits.  Check out their website at www.saskatoonroadrunners.ca .

Sunday, November 20 - Arthritis Society Jingle Bell Walk - Run for Arthritis.  18th annual. Enter this non-competitive, fun-filled, family-oriented pledge-based event for The Arthritis Society. Don a seasonal costume, tie jingle bells to your shoelaces and run, walk, jog or stroll the 2km, 5km or the 10km individual routes. Enter as individual or as a team (three or more people).

Check here for more http://arthritis.akaraisin.com/Common/Event/Home.aspx?seid=3792&mid=8 .

TRAIL SAFETY

Last week we told you about a badger near the University and others have reported seeing one in the area around the CPR bridge.  We’ve also been told of cougar sightings in the area of the Gabriel Dumont trail heading towards Diefenbaker Park.  We highly recommend running in groups and not by yourself.  Not to be morbid but if you do run on your own we recommend you have RoadID so that should something happen to you, you can be quickly identified and important people contacted.

BAREFOOT RUNNING SEMINAR - Saturday, November 5 at 10:30AM

Interested in barefoot running, the science and theories behind minimalism, and all the different shoes being offered?  We are offering a seminar presented by Physiotherapists Brad Spokes from Zone Sports Physiotherapy and newly convocated Matt Mazurik. Both Brad and Matt have a long history with BRAINSPORT as employees,  running coaches, and are exceptional runners.  They will provide current knowledge about barefoot running and answer your questions.  This is a free seminar but we ask that you preregister by calling the store at 244-0955.  Seminar is limited to 30 participants and will be held in our clinic space upstairs at BRAINSPORT.

FUN RUN FOR ORPHANS

Here is information on a fundraising effort by Run Club member Kelvin Jones

Fun Run for Orphans in Kenya

In 2008 there was political unrest in Kenya. In November of 2009 we met a young couple, Joseph and Linet, who had 2 chil- dren of their own; took in 6 children orphaned due to the un- rest. They have lived in a two room rental property. Hope for the Nations* out of Kelowna BC has been helping this couple since that time and have recently bought them an acre of land. They are in the process of building them a home on this land. Joseph is an organic farmer and Linet is a teacher.

They have already fenced the land and planted a garden. The foundation has been laid and a well dug. Now the walls and roof need to be constructed. Join us to help support this fam- ily in Kenya.

*Hope for the Nations has orphanages in 20 different countries throughout the world. Our organization Hope for at Risk Children International (HARC) has partnered with them to build 3 orphanages. One in Kenya and two in Uganda.

MOVEMBER

Day 1 of my adventure in facial hair.

As I begin my Mo-Venture, our friend Dave Stark is continuing with treatment for prostate cancer.  I think it would be great to show our appreciation of Dave’s contributions to the running community by supporting Movember.  Whether you donate to my page or to someone else’s,  your contribution will help research funding in the areas of Men’s health and more specifically to Prostate Cancer.

If you would like to help me raise funds for Movember and friends like Dave you can donate by following this link

Thank you for all your support.

ECOFRIENDLY SASK

We received this email last week asking that we share it with our customers and friends.  I know there will be a lot of fans amongst you for this information.

Greetings,

Saskatoon is a good place to live.

Pelicans and eagles soar over the river. We walk and bicycle along the Meewasin Valley trails and canoe on the river. There are wildflowers at Beaver Creek and a rich cultural heritage of artists, writers and musicians.

Join us at EcoFriendly Sask, an online publication dedicated to promoting and protecting our natural habitat. From native plants and Prairie songbirds, to bicycles and solar energy, parks and wilderness canoe trips, we celebrate a society that respects and protects its natural heritage.

This week's feature story profiles Andrew McKinlay who has stopped flying. The journey is now part of the adventure.
