GIRLS IN THE GAME
Murray Gross sent us this program announcement from the YWCA.
“GIRLS IN THE GAME is a non-competitive sport and physical activity introduction program for girls. Every week our participants spend time learning to play a variety of sports or physical activities, led by trained female instructors in a welcoming and non-competitive environment.”
These programs are for girls between the ages of 5 and 12, and include some Mom and Me classes as well as individual sporting activities. One of the major reasons I was attracted to this programming is that the courses are short (6 – 8 weeks) and the cost is reasonable. As a bonus, much of the programming will occur here at the YWCA! Registration is on-line through Girls in the Game. Here is a link to their Canadian website http://www.girlsinthegame.ca/index.html .

IF THE SHOE FITS, WEAR IT
When we fit you with shoes we suggest how the shoes should fit. I recently read this description in the Mizuno Run Club newsletter which I thought was worth sharing.
“So what does this perfect shoe feel like? There are a few key components. For starters, it should wrap affectionately around your mid-foot and arch. This is where your foot should feel like it’s being hugged by a shoe that loves it dearly. Next, it should embrace your heel while giving your forefoot and toes just enough wiggle room. Some breathing space, if you will. Finally, it should feel light and airy, like a natural extension of your body. It should move like your foot moves so that they feel intimately linked, like a second skin.”
SASKATOON ROADRUNNERS
The SRRA puts on most of the running events in Saskatoon and are offering other events as well. 2012 memberships are now available and as I’ve pointed out before, “membership has it’s benefits”. I’ve been a member for over 20 years. You can go here to register http://www.eventsonline.ca/events/srra/ . The SRRA annual social is coming up Friday, January 20 and it is recommended you purchase your membership prior to that.
RARAMURI
Dave Buchner recently sent out this link http://www.norawas.org/ . If you’ve read the book BORN TO RUN you might be interested in this site which appears to have been set up to support the Tarahumara/Raramuri people living in Mexico’s Copper Canyon.
BELOW ZERO SALE
Our annual Below Zero Sale is coming up January 19 to 21. Seems like Global climate change has seen this event see mild temperatures the past several years and so far this winter looks like it might be a repeat. The deal with this sale is that we set a minimum of 20 % off clothing. If the temperature is colder than -20 then that is the discount for the hour and the weather the past few years has not benefitted shoppers. This year Brian is going to pick somewhere else in Canada that is likely to be colder than what our forecast is looking to be. Stay tuned and hope for a cold snap, somewhere else. If we have any readers way up north we’d love to hear from you with your winter running stories.
RUN CLUB NEEDS LEADERS
I’ve now run with Run Club for 20 years and have led the Saturday morning club for the past 10 years. Some changes are coming up soon which we’ll tell you about probably next TIMES. What won’t change is the need for you to volunteer to lead a group. We provide you a place to gather and run together. We tell newcomers about how great our Run Club and it’s members are, we tell them how we run in groups according to pace. This means they won’t be left behind to run on their own. If they show up and there is no leader for a group then that group may be cancelled and they get a bad experience. Maybe it means that you take a turn leading a group that you don’t normally run with. Upside is you might meet some people you don’t know and make some new friends. When not leading it also means that you do not run in front of the leader and push the pace. Please help us make Run Club even better for 2012 and make sure every group has a leader in place by 6PM every Wednesday and 8:30AM on Saturday so that we can get running.
Well that is the TIMES for this week - Gotta Run
Ian
As always you can check out our website www.brainsport.ca or catch up on events at our Facebook page. The TIMES is also published and archived weekly on www.saskatoon.com and www.yourregina.com
