January is over already, that seemed to go by fast!  Looks like this issue of the TIMES has a BRAINFREEZE flavour.

BRAINFREEZE - CANADIAN RUNNING MAGAZINE

This appeared recently in Canadian Running magazine’s online edition.

If you’re looking for a chance to run a half-marathon in -20 C, don’t delay; the early-bird deadline for the Saskatoon Brainfreeze half-marathon is on Jan. 31.

The Brainfreeze, which takes place the first weekend of March, is a fundraiser for the University of Saskatchewan cross-country teams.

“You can’t really charge admission for cross-country meets like you do at football games,” race director Matt Mazurik told Canadian Running. Since the Brainfreeze began in 2009, the event has raised about $30,000 to support Huskie runners, who volunteer on race day — and in the weeks before — to help organize the race.

About 200 runners are expected to brave the cold for this year’s race on March 4, making it one of the most popular winter running events in the prairies.

If you’re interested in signing up, the early-bird deadline for both the half-marathon and the 10K is January 31. The 10K costs $40 and the half marathon is $50; both those prices increase by $10 on Feb. 1.

For more information, or to register for the race, visit the race website and download an information package or the registration form.

Note; last day to enter will be March 3, no race day entry.

BRAINFREEZE FACTS & TIPS

Here is a piece by Leia Fedyk of the U of S Huskies.  If you aren’t familiar with the BRAINSPORT BRAINFREEZE yet, it is a fund raising event to provide scholarships and travel expenses for the Huskie Cross Country team.

The Huskie track and field team is in the midst of dominating the indoor track scene. The annual sled dog meet was held this past weekend at the Saskatoon Fieldhouse, where the distance team took command over various club and university competitors. Leading Huskies in the 1500m distance event was Jodi Souter on the women's side and Daniel Block on the men's side. Training many times a week at the Fieldhouse, the distance team is gearing up to travel to Winnipeg for the University of Manitoba Bison Classic next weekend and then to Regina for the Queen City Kinsmen meet the following weekend.

Many members of the distance track team are also members of the Huskie Cross Country team that had an outstanding season last fall, with the women coming only 4 points short of a bronze medal at the CIS national championships. The cross country team will be holding the annual Brainsport Brainfreeze 10k and half marathon on March 4th on the Saskatoon Meewasin Valley Trail system and are looking forward to being part of the premier winter event in Saskatchewan.

LEIA’S RUNNING TIP

While training for the Brainfreeze: sacrifice speed for safety when running outside! There is always a patch of ice waiting for a lonely runner to slip on, which could lead to a number of injuries. If it is cold and icy, do speedwork indoors, the treadmill won't kill you. Save long, easy runs for the outdoors (they are more enjoyable anyways!).

CANADA CUP 3 - SPEED SKATING

Here is an event coming up where you can see some of Canada’s up and coming Olympian speed skaters in action.  The Saskatoon Lions Speed Skating Club is hosting Canada Cup 3 at the Clarence Downey Speed Skating Oval.  This is the 2012 Canadian Junior Championships.  Admission is Free.  Action is February 3 to 5.

TRACK & FIELD

I didn’t hear about the Sled Dog meet until after last TIMES went out but I did hear that Run Club member Chris Schwarz ran a smokin’ 5:12 mile at the meet.  Way to go Chris!

This Thursday and Friday is the 47th annual Knights of Columbus Indoor Games at the Fieldhouse.  There will be some fast running going on there.  It is only $6 a session and elementary school children are admitted free with an adult so it is cheap, family entertainment.

I saw a post on Facebook where  Canadian Running magazine reported in their online magazine that Saskatchewan native Brianne Theisen broke a 30 year old Canadian Pentathlon record at a meet in Texas.  Brianne is from Humboldt and runs with the University of Oregon Ducks.  I can even claim to be working when I’m on Facebook.

INOV 8 F-LITE

I was on Facebook this morning ( working of course ) and had a message asking if we carry the INOV8 shoe which has become popular with the Crossfit crowd.  I’m happy to tell you Crossfitters that we do have this shoe.  I’ve tried it and feel that it would also be good for activities like Tai Chi.  It is actually a mountain racing flat but it sure has developed a following for other purposes.
