BRAINSPORT - The Running Store LOGO BRAINSPORT TIMES
May.17.12

Hope everyone enjoyed the Family Day weekend, weather was sure good for outdoor activities.

Monday night we started our Half Marathon clinic coached by Mike McKague.  This clinic sold out, sorry there is no more room.  We still have a few spots left on Wednesday night with Brandi’s clinic if you want to improve your marathon or half marathon times.  We’re going to focus on being ready to race the Saskatoon Police Service 10K or half marathon and then go on to PB at the Saskatchewan Marathon.

BRAINSPORT BRAINFREEZE

I’m told there are about 70 signed up so far for the 10K and about 40 for the Half.  If our weather continues like this we may see some shorts out on the run.  Be better than slogging through snow drifts like the half marathon runners had to do last year.  Who knows what can happen though.

Registration information and forms are on the Events page of our website www.brainsport.ca

If you missed last week’s TIMES I’ve included a link to an excellent video production by Shawn Rempel of the 2011 BRAINFREEZE.  Maybe you’ll see yourself in it.

SPECIAL PRESENTATION  *** Dr. Ferber has cancelled his visit to Saskatoon - sorry ***

Zone Sports Physiotherapy is hosting Dr. Reed Ferber of the Running Injury Clinic at the University of Calgary.  Dr. Ferber is coming to BRAINSPORT on Tuesday, February 28 at 6:15PM for an hour long presentation on his research. There is no charge to attend this presentation but we are taking registration with a limit of 35.  Call the store at 244-0955 or drop by and we’ll put your name down.  Dr. Ferber is one of the leading researchers in running related injuries and should be very interesting.

CLINIC SCENE

10 K Clinic - Starting Thursday, March 22 at ***6:30*** PM.  Coached by Isobel Johnston & Jolene Koenders  Cost $100 plus GST.

This 10 week clinic will be of interest to runners wanting to try the 10K distance.  If you have not run 10K before you should be able to run continuously for 25 minutes before starting this clinic.

We’ll also be running more Learn to Run clinics as Spring approaches.  Here’s what we have planned.

Learn to Run Clinics are intended for individuals looking to make running part of their lifestyle for fun and fitness.  This is a progressive program beginning with walk-run and by the end of eight weeks you will be running 30 minutes.  Cost $70 plus GST.

  • Starting Tuesday, March 6 at 6PM. Coached by Murray Gross.  This clinic focusses on  preparing for the Hope Cancer Centre Race for Recovery to be held Sunday, April 29.

- Starting Wednesday, April 11 at 6:15 PM.  Reagan Wildeman.

This clinic ends the week of the Saskatchewan Marathon like our other spring clinics.  Come out and watch your fellow runners or volunteer to help out at the marathon.

WALKING CLUB

Maybe you are a new TIMES reader or reading it for the first time on Saskatoon.com.  We have a Walking Club that meets every Wednesday at 6PM along with our Running Club.  Both clubs are free and you can join us whenever it works for you.  If you are looking for a group to walk with and meet new friends, why not come out and give us a try?

RUNNING TIPS

This week we have a couple of tips from Jason Warick who has been coaching Brian to some fast times.

-Don’t start too fast! (workouts and races). Even or slightly negative pacing is faster and more fun.

-If you think you MIGHT be too sick or injured to run, you definitely ARE too sick or injured to run. Take time off.

Watch weekly for more running tips.

EL NATURALISTA  AWARD

If you shop in PEDESTRIAN you may be aware of the El Naturalista brand of shoes we carry.  You might not know that this company is very active in social good projects.  We received this email last week and are sharing it.  There may even be someone on our mailing list that might be involved with or know of organizations that might qualify to compete for this award.

HUSKIE CROSS COUNTRY UPDATE

Here is an update and running tip from Huskie Cross Country runner Leia Fedyk.  Remember that the BRAINFREEZE is to help these athletes compete.

The Huskie Track and Field team is set to compete in the CanWest Championships February 24th & 25th here in Saskatoon. Distance running front woman, Jodi Souter, will be competing in the 3000m and 1500m in hopes to make the CIS National team. Rounding out the distance events will be Marcia Richards, Rachael Edwards, Eric Mueller, Samir Marin, and Daniel Block. Wear your green and white to the Saskatoon Fieldhouse this weekend to cheer on our Huskies!

Winter running tip: if you are setting out to do a hard tempo run, make sure you start out against the wind. The second half of a tempo is usually more difficult and you don't need to add the wrath of the wind to make it worse (unless you are really adventurous). Being able to go with the wind on the second half will help you to finish strong, and avoid the extra chill the wind can bring once you have started to sweat.

CANADIAN RUNNING MAGAZINE

If you don’t get this magazine you really should.  Just got my latest issue and there is an article on p. 28 about the BRAINFREEZE, an article on Regina’s Simon Bairu on p.24, an interesting article on the debate around barefoot running on p. 42, and much more.
