Well that was a beautiful, warm summer weekend. Congratulations to Saskatoon and area triathletes who competed in hot & windy conditions around Penticton at Ironman Canada on Sunday. Much warmer than last year when some athletes actually quit due to the cold. Here are the hard earned finishing times for these folks, way to go Ironmen!

For our Regina readers, Milos Kostic blew away another age group record this year with a time of 11:14:24 for the 70-74 age group. Milos holds the current 65-69 record and missed Ironman Canada last year after sustaining severe injuries when he ran into a deer on his bike. The deer was fine apparently.

WORLD TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS
Saskatoon’s Kelsie Hendry was competing at these games in Daegu, South Korea recently. Although she didn’t make the finals in Pole Vault she cleared 4.25 meters which is pretty darned high!
BICYCLES FOR HUMANITY
The Saskatoon Chapter of Bicycles for Humanity invites you to participate in a… Bike Drive Saturday September 17th, 2011 9:00am until 3:00pm
In Canada, a bicycle is mostly used for recreation. In many poor countries a bicycle is the main mode of transportation. Owning a bicycle brings hope and enables families to survive. On September 17th bring your new or used bicycle down to the site of the old Barry Hotel (Ave B and 20th Street) and empower a family in Africa. Every bicycle collected will change a life forever.
Restrictions : Only adult bikes with wide tires will be accepted. Please: No kids bikes
No light framed 10-12 speeds with thin tires
Terrain in many countries is very hard on bikes, so only good working bicycles with sturdy frames and good tires will work long term.
Rain, sleet, hail, snow….regardless of weather we will be there!
Thank you for your continued support. Due to the generosity of the citizens of Saskatoon, over 1,000 bicycles have already been sent to Africa!

The Avery family of Regina is taking in two Sudanese orphans who will be taking their grade 12 in Regina. The boys tuition must be covered and it is about $20,000.00. We were amongst people asked to spread the word. Here is a link to more information than I could include in the TIMES. Lino and Angelo
ADVENTURE RACING NEWS
Unfortunately the Prairie Pitch isn’t being organized this year, but I have the next best thing for you. I’m creating a new race called the Gopher Chase Adventure Race and it is scheduled for Saturday, September 17. It will be a 7 – 10 hr race that will take racers all
over the City of Saskatoon. Teams of 2 or 3 (of any make-up) and soloists will bike, run, and paddle in a point to point race with numerous challenges along the way. The first team to cross the finish line is the winner. The race will be a great way to wind up the
summer, plus it should be a great way to spend your Saturday. The race will start and finish at Victoria Park near the Boathouse. Race day sign-in begins at 7 am with the race starting at 8 am. A post race BBQ will begin at 5 pm with prizes and awards to follow.
Additional race details and entry forms will be posted at www.accsask.ca shortly. Entry forms will also be available from the race sponsors shortly.
Depending on how the race goes (and the level volunteering), this race could be a step towards bringing back the Prairie Pitch. So with that being said, spread the word to your friends about the race and get them to sign up or help out if they can, and don’t forget to sign up yourself too.
Also, since this is a completely new race, I’m open to any suggestions you might have for things you would like to see in the race. So send me any comments or suggestions you have and I’ll see if I can implement them or not.
See you in a little less than a month!

TRAIL RUNNING NEWS
Don’t forget the SRRA Fall Trail Run out at Blackstrap on September 24. Details at www.saskatoonroadrunners.ca .
Run Club regular Molly Bell and her boys took in the Fin Island Trail run this past weekend out at Battleford and Molly sent us this report.
My family and I drove out to North Battleford to participate in the Fin Island Trail Run on Saturday. The run is a part of the Battlefords Bridgefest, a local festival with entertainment and activities along the North Saskatchewan River in the town of Battleford. They offer a 1k kids' challenge, a 5k walk or run, 10k walk or run, and 21k walk or run. We stayed in North Battleford the night before the race since the start time for the kids' event was 8 am. As promised, at 8 am sharp the kids' challenge started and my 7-year-old and 5-year-old boys were off and away. Their race consisted of running up a short hill and partway across the bridge to Fin Island before turning around and running back down.
Both boys were very excited to wear their race numbers and they both did a great job. Shortly after that was the start of the 5/10/21k, all of which began at the same time. My 9-year-old son had signed up for the 5k (his first) and I was in the 10k. Luckily the routes were together for the first 4k so he only had to run the last 1k to the finish alone. We set off over the bridge and into the trails on the south part of the island. The 5k consisted of crossing the bridge onto the island and then running a loop out and around the southern end of the island and then back into Battleford for the start/finish. When my son and I split up at the 4k mark (and water station) he headed back over the bridge and I went north to the other end of the island and then looped back to end up at the start/finish again. The trails, which are groomed for cross-country skiing in the winter, were mostly mowed grass and some hard-packed dirt. They were nice and wide and the route was very pretty. Overall, it was a great run, very well organized, with well-marked trails and wonderful volunteers. Also, it's a free run! I think we'll definitely be back next year.

FLOODING AFFECTS QUEEN CITY MARATHON
We’ve been asked to share this with you.
IMPORTANT REVISIONS TO QUEEN CITY MARATHON COURSE
Due to recent flooding and the chance of future flooding on the regular Credit Union Queen City Marathon race course, organizers have been required to create an alternate course for the Full Marathon and Relay Team events. There is one very small modifed section that will affect the Half Marathoners for a hundred meters or so, but other than that, the Half Marathon course will remain the same as in previous years. The major changes affect the Full and Relay events.
Working in conjunction with the City of Regina, the Wascana Centre Authority and the Regina City Police, the new course will take Full Marathon and Relay Team members along the usual opening 19.5 KM (approx) that would normally be run (same as last year). However, at that point, Full Marathon and Relay Team members will now have to do a modified "second loop" of the half marathon course, with two slight extended sections, in order to make up the proper 42.2 KM distance. Please note that this new, alternate course has been properly measured and is being processed and certified as a Boston-qualifying course.
For an information document and a revised map of these course changes affecting the Full Marathon and Relay Team participants, please log on to the Credit Union Queen City Marathon website: www.RunQCM.com. Under the "Recent Announcements" section of our home page, you'll see an Important Course Update announcement regarding the changes.
The organizing committee of the Credit Union Queen City Marathon thanks you in advance for your patience and understanding as we adjust our course to avoid the risk of race-day flooding and potential race cancellation.
ONE NATION RUN
Last Wednesday we had a visit from two of the runners running across Canada to bring awareness and raise funds for childhood poverty here in Canada. This is in partnership with World Vision. If you would like more information on this please visit their website at

IRONMAN CANADA SALE
I think we’ll carry this sale on a little further to accommodate returning Ironman athletes. I know a couple of you had to have emergency repairs to your wetsuits before the race so maybe it’s time for a new wetsuit?
